U.S. LNG under scrutiny as Gastech 2024 approaches
Gas Outlook will be reporting from Gastech, one of the largest global gatherings of the oil and gas industry, in Houston next week, at a time when the fate of the U.S. LNG sector is unclear.
As Gastech 2024 approaches, the fate of the U.S. LNG industry is uncertain after a U.S. court tossed out the construction authorisations of two major LNG projects in South Texas in early August.
On August 6th, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit rescinded federal authorisations for the two gas export terminals located in Brownsville, Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border. The $18 billion Phase 1 of Rio Grande LNG is the larger of the two projects, and it is currently under construction. Texas LNG is still awaiting financing and remains on the drawing board.
NextDecade’s stock plunged following the development, dealing a blow to the Rio Grande LNG project’s fortunes. Analysts say the decision could also have a “chilling effect” across the entire U.S. LNG industry.
Gas Outlook’s North America Correspondent Nick Cunningham will be reporting from inside Gastech, which will take place at the George R Brown Convention Center in Houston from September 17th-20th, on the outlook for U.S. LNG following this recent upheaval.
Nick will also be listening out for discussion, among other things, on the health implications of U.S. LNG build-out, another critical topic in the industry following a recent study that found that LNG export terminals result in significant health costs on communities living nearby.
Stay tuned for our news, analysis and tweets live from the conference.
